Gopal Krishna Gokhale was associated with the Liberal (Moderate) camp. He believed in equanimity and a gentle sense of justice. He had complete faith that the nation’s regeneration could not take place amid storms of agitation. He believed in the purity of both means and ends. Influenced by these ideas, Gandhiji became his disciple. He entered politics from the platform of the Bombay Congress session of 1889. In 1897, he and Dinshaw Wacha were asked to give evidence before the Welby Commission appointed to examine Indian expenditure.
