Ruchira Kamboj served as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from August 2022 until her retirement in May 2024. She was the first woman to hold the position of India’s Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the UN. She served as India’s Permanent Representative (with the rank of Ambassador) to UNESCO (Headquarters: Paris) from April 2014 to July 2017. In December 2022, she became the first Indian woman to preside over the United Nations Security Council.
