Explanation
(65) ## Page 14 Tatya Tope (1814–1859) was also known as Ramchandra Pandurang. He was a major leader of the Indian Revolt of 1857. He was born in the Yeola/Yevla village of Maharashtra, where he became a friend of Nana Dhondu Pant (also known as Nana Saheb), the adopted son of Peshwa Baji Rao II. After the death of Peshwa Baji Rao II in 1851, Dalhousie deprived Nana of his father’s pension. Tatya Tope had already begun to consider the British as his enemy. Together, they defeated the Indian troops of the East India Company at Kanpur, established Nana Saheb’s supremacy, and Tatya himself became the Commander-in-Chief of the army. He was hanged by a military court in April 1859.
