The Luni River of Rajasthan originates from Naga Hill, located in the Aravalli Range near Ajmer. Initially, it is known as Sagarmati, and after its tributary Sarsuti (originating from Pushkar Lake) joins it, it is called the Luni River. In the upper part of its course, for about 100 km, it has fresh water; but on reaching Balotra, its water becomes saline/brackish due to the salt-rich surface of its channel in that region. This river flows in the south-west direction and merges into the Rann of Kutch. Thus, it is an inland (endorheic) river. Due to the salinity of its water, it is called Luni (Rajasthani—Luni). This name is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Lavanavati’ (Salt River).
