Mahavira Swami was born at Kundagrama or Kundalpur (near Vaishali) around 599 B.C. His mother Trishala was the sister of Chetaka, the chief of the Licchavi republican state of Vaishali, and his father Siddhartha was the head of the confederation of the Jnatrika Kshatriyas. His elder brother was Nandivardhana. In some old editions of National Council of Educational Research and Training books, Mahavira’s birth year is mentioned as 540 B.C. On this basis, many other publishers also printed the same year in their books, creating confusion. The correct birth year of Mahavira is 599 B.C., because Mahavira belonged to a period earlier than Gautama Buddha. Gautama Buddha was born in 563 B.C.
