Explanation

The incident of 24 April, 1857 at Meerut proved to be a milestone in the history of India’s freedom struggle. Colonel Carmichael Smyth ordered that greased cartridges be issued to Indian soldiers, which had to be opened with the mouth. Angered by this, 85 out of 90 soldiers of the 3rd Bengal Native Cavalry / 3rd Regiment of Light Cavalry revolted against these cartridges. On 9 May, 1857, these rebel soldiers were court-martialled at the Meerut parade ground. Enraged by this action, they revolted at Meerut on 10 May, 1857 and sounded the bugle of the first war of independence, i.e., the Revolt of 1857.
