What was the aim of Eka Movement in Oudh?
Explanation
The Eka Movement (1921–22) was led by Madari Pasi. The main centres of this movement were Hardoi, Barabanki, Bahraich and Sitapur. The peasants main complaints were the increase in land revenue and the practice of collecting land revenue in the form of produce. More than 50% land revenue was being taken from the peasants. The zamindars’ agents (thekedars) used to harass the peasants. The Eka Movement had little faith in the non-violent policies laid down by the nationalists. As a result, the nationalist leaders became separated from the movement, and the movement took a different path. In this movement, paying land revenue to the government was not stopped; rather, the main demand of the agitators was—“Due to rising inflation, land revenue should be converted into cash payment.”
