The Khond tribal people lived in a vast hilly belt stretching from Tamil Nadu to Bengal and Central India. Because it was a hilly region, they were largely independent. They revolted against the British during 1846–1855 (the movement continued even before and after this period; this phase is mainly associated with the leadership of Chakra Bisoi) in the name of a young king. The main causes of the revolt were the British government’s attempts to ban human sacrifice (Meriah), the imposition of new taxes, and the entry of zamindars and moneylenders into many areas, which caused immense suffering to the tribals. The British formed a Meriah Agency, against which the Khonds rebelled.
