Explanation

According to the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968 (as amended), the Election Commission recognizes a political party as a National Party only if any one of the following three conditions is fulfilled— (a) The candidates set up by the party, in any four or more States, at the last general election to the Lok Sabha (House of the People) or to the Legislative Assembly of the State concerned, secure not less than 6 percent of the total valid votes polled in each of those States at that general election; and, in addition, the party returns at least four members to the Lok Sabha at the said general election from any State or States.
