On 10 October, 2014, the then Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, launched the country’s first ‘National Mental Health Policy’. It may be noted that the main objective of the National Health Policy, 2017 is to clearly define the government’s role and priorities regarding all dimensions of the health system—investment in the health sector, management and financing of health services, prevention of diseases, access to technology, human resource development, promotion of various medical systems, creation of the knowledge base required for better health, coordination with various departments, etc.
