After the Mahabhinishkramana, in search of knowledge, Lord Buddha reached the hermitage of Alara Kalama and took initiation from him. He practised austerities there, but he was not satisfied. Alara Kalama was a teacher of Sankhya philosophy and was famous for his spiritual powers; therefore, Buddha first attempted to gain knowledge from Alara Kalama and Rudraka Ramaputra.
