In the medieval period, the term Bantai referred to a method of revenue assessment in which the actual produce was divided between the state and the cultivator. Sher Shah Suri adopted three systems for revenue assessment—(1) Nashq or Muqta‘i or Kanqut, (2) Cash assessment or Zabti, and (3) Galla Bakhshi or Batai (Bantai).
