Having obtained the throne as a supporter of Sunni orthodoxy against the liberal Dara, he tried to enforce the law of the Quran strictly. According to this law, every devout Muslim should “strive in the path of Allah,” or in other words, should continue jihad against non-Muslim countries (Dar-ul-Harb) until they are transformed into the domain of Islam (Dar-ul-Islam). The ‘Do-Aspa and Sih-Aspa’ system was introduced by Jahangir. Under it, mansabdars had to maintain a larger force without any increase in their zat rank. (i) Do-Aspa—In this, mansabdars had to keep horses double the number of their ‘sawar’ rank. (ii) Sih-Aspa—In this, mansabdars had to keep horses three times the number of their sawar rank.
