Explanation
In the Buddhist text Anguttara Nikaya, a list of 16 Mahajanapadas is available. These are: (1) Anga, (2) Magadha, (3) Kashi, (4) Kosala, (5) Vajji, (6) Malla, (7) Chedi, (8) Vatsa, (9) Kuru, (10) Panchala, (11) Matsya, (12) Shurasena, (13) Ashmaka, (14) Avanti, (15) Gandhara, and (16) Kamboja. Among these, only Ashmaka was located in South India. In the Buddhist text Digha Nikaya, only 12 Mahajanapadas are mentioned. The Jain text Bhagavati Sutra also gives a list of 16 Mahajanapadas, but the names differ slightly there.
