C. Rajagopalachari was the first Indian and the last Governor-General of independent India from 1948 to 1950. He remained in this post till 26 January, 1950. He served as the Chief Minister of Madras from 1952 to 1954. Due to differences with the Congress on various issues, he resigned from the Congress and, in 1959, formed the “Swatantra Party” along with his associates.
