The earliest evidence of animal husbandry and agriculture in the Indian subcontinent has been found at Mehrgarh (present-day Pakistan). On the basis of the latest discoveries, the earliest site with evidence of agriculture in the Indian subcontinent is Lahuradewa, located in Sant Kabir Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. Evidence of rice has been found here dating to the period between about 8000 BCE and 7000 BCE. It is noteworthy that before this latest discovery, Mehrgarh was considered the earliest agricultural site in the Indian subcontinent, where evidence of wheat has been found, while Koldihwa (on the bank of the Belan River, Prayagraj district) is considered the site with the earliest evidence of rice.
