In 1911, the Dutch physicist H. K. Onnes (1853–1926) studied the effect of temperature on resistance. He cooled some metal samples to a few kelvins and measured their electrical resistance. He found that at a very low temperature (around 4.2 K), the electrical resistance of mercury becomes zero. Later, it was found that many elements and compounds behave similarly at low temperatures. Such substances are called superconductors. Since superconductors show no resistance, there is no loss of energy when current flows through them. Therefore, superconductors can be used efficiently for transmitting electricity from one place to another. Another essential property of superconductors is that they prevent magnetic flux from entering their interior The magnetic field/flux is confined to the surface, i.e., their magnetic permeability is zero.
