Explanation
During the Second World War (1939–45), the Andaman and Nicobar Islands slipped out of British control and came under Japanese occupation in 1942. Japan’s control remained till 1945, when the British reoccupied the islands. In November 1943, the Japanese government symbolically handed over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to Subhas Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Provisional Government of Free India (Provisional Government of Free India). After receiving this charge, Netaji renamed Nicobar as “Swaraj” and Andaman as “Shaheed”.
