Punjab was a part of Ahmad Shah Abdali’s empire, but after his death in 1772, except for a few smaller regions like Multan and Kashmir, the rest came under the control of the Sikh Misls. Meanwhile, due to internal conflicts among the Afghans, Ranjit Singh got an opportunity to strengthen his position. In 1803, Ahmad Shah Abdali’s grandson Shah Shuja ascended the throne of Kabul, but his brother Shah Mahmud, with the help of powerful Barakzai chiefs—Fateh Khan and Dost Mohammad Khan deposed him in 1809 and himself captured Kashmir and Peshawar. On this occasion, Shah Shuja sought Ranjit Singh’s help to regain the throne of Kabul and presented him with the Koh-i-Noor (Kohinoor) diamond.
