On 7–8 August 1942, a special meeting of the All India Congress Committee was held at the historic Gowalia Tank (August Kranti Maidan) in Bombay, in which the Wardha Resolution (Quit India) was ratified. After minor amendments, the resolution was adopted on 8 August 1942, and the formal launch of the Quit India Movement against the British, as part of India’s freedom struggle, took place on 8 August 1942 itself. On 9 August 1942, due to the arrest of leaders, the movement spontaneously spread among the masses. Thus, the practical beginning of the Quit India Movement is considered to be 9 August 1942. As soon as the movement began, under “Operation Zero Hour”, Gandhiji and other prominent Congress leaders were arrested. Gandhiji was arrested and kept in the Aga Khan Palace at Poona (Pune) along with Sarojini Naidu. The 1942 movement had the maximum impact in Bombay, Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, the United Provinces and Madras.
