Alauddin Hasan. As a result of the rebellion of the Amiran-e-Sadah in the Deccan, the Bahmani Empire was established in the last days of Muhammad bin Tughlaq’s reign. A chief named Zafar Khan (Hasan Gangu, 1347–1358 A.D.) assumed the title of “Alauddin Hasan Bahman Shah” and ascended the throne in 1347 A.D., thereby laying the foundation of the Bahmani Empire. He made Gulbarga the capital of his newly established empire and named it “Ahsanabad.” For administering the empire, he divided it into four tarafs (provinces)—Gulbarga, Daulatabad, Berar, and Bidar. Each province was under a governor. The Gulbarga province was the most important, and Bijapur was also included in it. He fought the Hindu rulers of the south and adopted the practice of granting posts and jagirs to his followers. He ordered that jizya should not be collected from Hindus. ###
