Nalanda University was world-famous for the study of Buddhist philosophy. Around the middle of the fifth century A.D., during the Gupta period, Nalanda came into existence. Kumaragupta I first donated to the Nalanda Buddhist monastery, and later Gupta rulers such as Buddhagupta, Tathagatagupta, and Baladitya also made donations to the monastery.
