In 1919, in a jagir of Pratapgarh district, the “Nai–Dhobi Band” was the first instance of an organised act of social boycott. Jhinguri Singh and Durgapal played an important role in it, but soon a new face emerged in the movement—Baba Ramchandra, who not only took charge of the movement but also made it stronger and more combative. Baba Ramchandra belonged to a Brahmin family in Maharashtra. By the middle of 1920, he emerged as a peasant leader and began organising the peasants in Awadh. He had an extraordinary capacity for organisation.
