Explanation
At the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress (December, 1929), “Purna Swaraj” was declared, and it was resolved to observe 26 January, 1930 as “Independence Day.” Until independence, 26 January continued to be celebrated as Independence Day. However, India became independent on 15 August, 1947, and thereafter 15 August began to be celebrated every year as “Independence Day.” After independence, to make the date 26 January memorable, the Indian Constitution was enforced in full on 26 January, 1950, and since then 26 January has been celebrated every year as “Republic Day.”
