Explanation

The Preamble of the Indian Constitution states that on 26 November, 1949, the people of India adopted, enacted and gave to themselves this Constitution. The date of adoption, completion and passing of the Constitution is also considered 26 November, 1949. On this day, provisions relating to citizenship, the interim Parliament, and temporary and transitional provisions came into force. The remaining provisions of the Constitution came into effect from 26 January, 1950. Therefore, the date on which the Constitution became fully effective is taken as 26 January, 1950.
