In administration, the Muhtasib was the officer of the department for inspection of public conduct. His duty was to maintain high moral standards among the people. To keep public conduct pure, Akbar imposed restrictions on the open trade of liquor and prohibited prostitutes from residing in cities. Prostitutes were expelled from the city and settled at a new place, which was named ‘Shaitanpuri’.
