The Wahabi movement originally began in Arabia. Its founder was Abdul Wahhab (Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab), and it was named after him. Initially, it was an Islamic reform movement. In India, the founder and early propagator of the Wahabi movement was Syed Ahmad of Rae Bareli district (Uttar Pradesh). In 1830 AD, during Syed Ahmad’s visit to Patna, Patna became a major centre of the Wahabi movement.
