In 1855–56, the Santhal rebellion mainly took place against British rule. Their main complaint was against the bhadralog (civilized people), i.e., the respectable people of Bengal and North India who came and settled in their area and exploited them. When the tribals complained to the British, the British supported those bhadralog. The tribals called their exploiters diku. In 1855, under the leadership of four brothers—Sidhu, Kanhu, Chand and Bhairav—the Santhals gathered and expressed their desire to govern their area themselves. The rebellion began and became widespread. The rebels disrupted the communication system between Bhagalpur and Rajmahal. The entire region came under their rule. They announced the end of the Company’s rule.
