Charles Andrews (Deenbandhu Andrews) was a professor at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He had deep affection for Indians and wanted to become an Indian in every way. He had close relations with Rabindranath Tagore, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and Mahatma Gandhi. The biographers of C.F Andrews—Banarsidas Chaturvedi and Marjorie Sykes—in their book “Charles Freer Andrews: A Narrative” mention that the nickname “Deenbandhu” (friend of the poor) was first given to C.F. Andrews in 1917 by Indians in Fiji. Andrews was also the President of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) in 1925 and 1927. He went to London with Gandhi to attend the Round Table Conference.
