In recent years, Buddhist monks have been protesting in Bihar to obtain control over the Mahabodhi Temple at Gaya. For the first time, the Sri Lankan Buddhist monk Anagarika Dharmapala raised this demand in 1891 AD, stating that the Mahabodhi Temple at Gaya should be under the control of Buddhist monks. Nagarjuna Surai Seshai, President of the All India Mahabodhi Temple Liberation Committee, also placed the demand for control of the Mahabodhi Temple by Buddhist monks before the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
