Daulat Rao Scindia and Jaswant Holkar both wanted to prove themselves supreme in Pune. Baji Rao II was supporting Scindia. In 1801, he got Jaswant’s brother killed; as a result, Jaswant Holkar’s army attacked Pune and defeated the combined forces of the Peshwa and Scindia. Baji Rao II fled and took refuge at Bassein, and on 31 December, 1802, he signed the Treaty of Bassein with the British. Under the treaty, Peshwa Baji Rao II accepted British protection. This treaty is regarded as the first Subsidiary Alliance concluded by the Marathas with the British.
