The renowned film director Satyajit Ray was awarded the special ‘Oscar’ for lifetime achievement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1992. Other major awards and honours received by Satyajit Ray are—an honorary doctorate degree by Oxford University (till then, among film personalities, only Charlie Chaplin had received this honour); France’s ‘Legion of Honour’ in 1987; the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ in 1984; and a few days before his death in 1992, he was awarded the ‘Bharat Ratna’ by the President of India.
