Explanation

Under the First Treaty of Allahabad (12 August 1765), the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II permanently granted the Company the Diwani of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa; and under the Second Treaty of Allahabad (16 August 1765), the Nawab of Awadh (Shuja-ud-Daula) promised to give the districts of Allahabad and Kara to the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. At this time, Robert Clive was the Governor of Bengal on behalf of the East India Company. The entire life of Shah Alam II was full of calamities. He was blinded in 1788. During the time of Shah Alam II, the British gained control over Delhi in 1803. Shah Alam II and his two successors Akbar II (1806–37) and Bahadur Shah II (1837–57) remained merely pensioners of the East India Company.
