The Chinese traveller I-Tsing (671–695 A.D.), when he was 37 years old, decided to visit India with some of his Buddhist companions, with the desire to see the remnants of Buddhism. Later, his companions left him, and he alone boarded a ship from City of Canton and set out for India. He came to India via the southern sea route and returned to China via Sumatra.
