The British government made Bal Gangadhar Tilak an accused in the murder case of the then Pune plague commissioner W.C. Rand and Lieutenant Ayerst. Tilak was found guilty and was sentenced to 18 months of rigorous imprisonment. When he came out of jail, he emerged as a national hero. Thus, not due to any single incident, but after many nationalist actions, Tilak was given the title “Lokmanya.”
