Established to ensure the social and economic empowerment of Bihar’s rural poor, the “Bihar Rural Livelihoods Project”, popularly known as “JEEViKA”, has achieved unprecedented success. It is primarily a State Government initiative related to poverty alleviation in rural areas of Bihar. Up to September, 2018, the estimated number of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Bihar was approximately 8.17 lakh. As per the Bihar Economic Survey 2024–25, under JEEViKA, up to September, 2024, 1063.5 thousand Self-Help Groups and 71.1 thousand Village Organizations were formed.
