Explanation

The sequence of the four major battles fought by Humayun is as follows—Deora, Chausa, Kannauj and Sirhind. In 1532 A.D., he defeated the Afghan rebels at a place called Daurah (Deora), situated on the banks of the Gomati River. In 1539 A.D., in the Battle of Chausa, Humayun had to face defeat at the hands of Sher Shah; in this very battle, a water-carrier (bhishti) named Nizam saved Humayun’s life. This victory at Chausa against Humayun enhanced both the power and prestige of Sher Khan (Sher Shah). He assumed the title “Farid al-Din Sher Shah,” got the khutba read in his name, and also had it inscribed on the coins. In 1540 A.D., in the Battle of Kannauj or Bilgram too, Humayun was defeated by Sher Shah and was forced to wander here and there like an exile. In 1555 A.D., the victory in the Battle of Sirhind once again restored Humayun’s lost kingdom to him. Thus, the correct order of the battles is—Deora (1532 A.D.), Chausa (1539 A.D.), Kannauj (1540 A.D.) and Sirhind (1555 A.D.).
