Explanation

Chauri-Chaura is a town in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Here, on 4 February 1922, a crowd of protesters set fire to a police outpost of the British administration. According to the Chauri-Chaura Martyrs’ Memorial, a total of 23 policemen were killed in this incident. Gandhiji condemned this incident and described it as a “Himalayan blunder.” On 12 February 1922, in the meeting of the Congress Working Committee held at Bardoli, it was decided to suspend the movement. Regarding his decision to end the movement, Gandhiji wrote in ‘Young India’ that—“To save the movement from turning violent, I am ready to bear every insult, every suffering, complete boycott, and even death.”
