According to the International Commission on Large Dams, about 40 percent of the total large dams in the world are located in China (23,841 dams). Large dams are defined as those having a height of 15 metres or more, or a storage capacity exceeding 3 million cubic metres. In some cases, dams with a height between 5 and 15 metres are also classified as large dams based on storage capacity criteria.
