British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald presented the Communal Award on 16 August, 1932. Under it, certain seats were reserved in the legislatures for each minority community, and the members were to be elected through separate electorates. Muslims and Sikhs were already considered minorities. Now, under this Communal Award, the Dalit class was also treated as a minority and separated from the Hindus.
